Shim-Maebashi Station (新前橋駅) is a station with a station building over the tracks, in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Ryōmō Line. It opened on 1 July 1921.
History
In 1884 the Nippon Railway opened its Takasaki to Maebashi line, passing near this site. It was nationalised on 1 November 1906 and came under the government railways. Shim-Maebashi Station opened on 1 July 1921, when the Ministry of Railways opened the Jōetsu South Line (上越南線) to Shibukawa. The station was built as the junction with the Ryōmō Line. From February 1923 it handled small freight consignments and became a general station. On 1 September 1931 the Jōetsu South Line joined the Jōetsu North Line to form the Jōetsu Line.
On 1 June 1949 the Japanese National Railways was formed, and the station came under it. On 20 December 1957 the Ryōmō Line section between Takasaki and Shin-Maebashi was merged into the Jōetsu Line, and this station became part of the Jōetsu Line. On 20 April 1959 the Shin-Maebashi electric train depot was built within the station grounds.
A footbridge over the tracks was built on the east side in 1965. On 19 August 1983 the station building was moved onto a bridge over the tracks. At first the stairs on the Takasaki side could not be used. On 10 September 1983 those stairs opened, and the station came fully into use, apart from a free passage that was due to open the next spring. A Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened on 17 March 1986. On 1 April 1987 the station became a station of JR East and Japan Freight Railway (JR Freight). Automatic ticket gates came into use on 21 November 1995.
On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable here for trips towards Takasaki and Maebashi. On 19 December 2001 the JR Freight station closed, and freight handling ended. On 16 October 2004 Suica became usable as far as Shibukawa. On 10 December 2005 the Shin-Maebashi depot merged with the former Takasaki depot, creating the Takasaki Rolling Stock Centre (高崎車両センター). Station improvement work finished on 26 March 2011, and escalators, lifts and an accessible toilet inside the gates came into use. A multi-function ticket machine was installed on 14 September 2011.
On 15 February 2023 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. The next day, 16 February 2023, a reserved-seat ticket machine that speaks (話せる指定席券売機) was introduced.
