Shimodate is a railway station in Tokyo.

Shimodate Station (下館駅) is in Chikusei, Ibaraki Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Mito Line. Kantō Railway, Japan Freight Railway Company and Mōka Railway also operate here. It opened on 16 January 1889.

History

The station opened on 16 January 1889 with the Mito Railway line between Oyama and Mito. The Mito Railway was transferred to Nippon Railway on 1 March 1892, and nationalised on 1 November 1906. On 1 April 1912 the Mōka Light Railway opened from here to Mōka. On 1 November 1913 the Jōsō Railway opened between Toride and here.

The north station building was completed in April 1937. The telegram service ended on 1 November 1963. The south exit opened in 1976. On 25 May 1976 an imperial train ran from Shimodate to Harajuku, carrying Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun to a national tree-planting festival. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 26 April 1985 another imperial train ran from Shimodate to Harajuku.

JR East and JR Freight took over on 1 April 1987. On 11 April 1988 the JR Mōka Line became the Mōka Railway's line. On 1 October 1992 JR opened a Midori no Madoguchi counter at the south exit. Freight train service ended on 22 March 1997. Automatic gates opened on 4 March 1998. Rapid trains started on the Jōsō Line on 24 August 2005. On 1 April 2006 the south exit ticket gates passed to Kantō Railway, and the Midori window there closed.

On 13 March 2008 the north Bi-u Plaza and the Midori window were combined into a travel counter, and a reserved-seat machine was installed. Departure melodies were added to the Mito Line platforms on 14 March 2009. An elevator on the footbridge opened on 27 December 2013. The Bi-u Plaza closed on 30 June 2015.
