Sodegaura Station (袖ケ浦駅) is in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, and is run by East Japan Railway Company on the Uchibō Line. It opened on 21 August 1912 as Naraha Station (楢葉駅).
History
The station opened on 21 August 1912 as Naraha Station (楢葉駅) on the Kisarazu Line. It was named after Naraha village, where it stood. On 24 May 1919 the line was renamed the Hōjō Line. On 15 April 1929 the Hōjō Line merged into the Bōsō Line. On 1 April 1933 the Bōsō Line was split, and the station became part of the Bōsō West Line.
Freight and parcel handling ended on 1 October 1971. On 15 July 1972 the line was renamed the Uchibō Line. On 31 March 1974 the station was renamed Sodegaura Station.
JR East took over on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates opened on 4 November 1995. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. On 1 December 2001, some rapid trains began stopping here: early-morning up trains and night-time down trains only. From 16 October 2004, all rapid trains stopped. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 24 March 2007. A ticket machine called Moshi-moshi Kaeru-kun started on 25 March 2007 and closed on 29 February 2012. A north-south free passage opened on 11 October 2014, and the new station building opened on 12 October 2014.
