History
The government railway opened Oyama Station (小山駅) on 1 February 1889 when the line from Kōzu to Shizuoka opened. The Oyama to Gotemba section was double-tracked on 1 March 1891. On 12 October 1909 the line through here was named the Tōkaidō Line. In 1912 the railway first announced a new name, Rokugō, then changed the date several times. On 1 July 1912 the station became Suruga Station (駿河駅).
On 1 December 1934 the Kōzu to Numazu section, which runs through here, was renamed the Gotemba Line. The Gotemba Line became single track on 11 July 1943. The station was renamed Suruga-Ōyama on 1 January 1952. The station building was rebuilt in 1968. The section was electrified on 27 April 1968. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1973.
Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. JR Central took over on 1 April 1987. The station became unstaffed on 17 March 2012. TOICA became usable on 2 March 2019.
