History
Takadanobaba Station (高田馬場駅) opened on 15 September 1910 as a station on the Yamanote Line, run by the Railway Agency (鉄道院). The Seibu Railway opened a temporary station here on 16 April 1927, before the point where its line crosses the Yamanote Line. On 15 April 1928 the Seibu station was moved to its present position, east of the Yamanote Line. On 13 April 1945 a US air raid during the Pacific War burned the station building. In 1963 the Seibu station got a new up platform. The old platform became the down platform, and the up platform became a temporary alighting platform. On 23 December 1964 the Teito Rapid Transit Authority opened its Tozai Line station here.
On 20 April 1984 the handling of parcels passed between the national railway and the Seibu Railway ended. In March 1987 work began on Tozai Line station improvements, including wider platforms and concourses. On 1 April 1987, when national railways were split up, the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East). On 24 October 1988 the Shinjuku commuter transport association, chaired by the Shinjuku ward mayor, petitioned Keizo Obuchi, then Chief Cabinet Secretary, to stop the Saikyo Line here. On 23 February 1991 automatic ticket gates were installed at the JR Toyama exit. On 10 February 1994 they were installed at the JR Waseda exit.
The Tozai Line station improvement work was completed in June 1994. In 1998 the Seibu station building was renovated. Its transfer gates were rebuilt, automatic fare machines moved to the second floor, and air conditioning began on the platform. On 10 March 2001 the Seibu renovation was completed and the Toyama exit was added. Suica could be used at JR East from 18 November 2001. On 1 March 2003 the Yamanote Line departure melody became the theme of the original Astro Boy series. On 1 April 2004 the Tozai Line stations passed to Tokyo Metro, when the Teito Rapid Transit Authority was privatised.
Takadanobaba Metropia, with four shops, opened on 26 October 2005. Lifts were installed on the Yamanote platforms in 2006. PASMO could be used on Seibu and Tokyo Metro from 18 March 2007. On 5 April 2008 a mural of Osamu Tezuka characters was completed under the JR and Seibu viaduct on the Waseda side. On 1 October 2012 the Seibu Shinjuku Line departure melody became a commercial song for Marukome. On 24 May 2015 Tokyo Metro introduced a departure melody on the Tozai Line.
On 1 November 2019 the JR East station was contracted out. On 16 September 2020 platform doors came into use on the third Seibu platform. On 9 February 2024 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. On 10 February 2024 a talking reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced. On 1 October 2025 JR East started its Eki-net Q Ticket service.
