Mejiro Station (目白駅) is a ground-level station with an elevated station building in Toshima, Tokyo, on the Yamanote Line, run by East Japan Railway Company. It opened on 16 March 1885 as a Nippon Railway station.
History
Nippon Railway (日本鉄道) opened the station on 16 March 1885. Freight handling began in 1903. It was nationalized on 1 November 1906 under the railway nationalization law. On 12 October 1909 it was assigned to the Yamanote Line.
In 1922 the station building was rebuilt as the first elevated station building in Japan. It was rebuilt again on 12 August 1928. The station renovation was completed on 16 August 1962.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office (みどりの窓口) opened on 11 July 1973. Freight handling ended on 20 September 1973. Luggage handling ended on 1 February 1984. East Japan Railway Company took over on 1 April 1987.
An automatic ticket gate opened on 2 February 1991. Mejiro and Harajuku stations tried a full platform smoking ban from 1 July 1994, and the ban was later reintroduced. The current station building was completed on 29 July 2000. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001.
On 23 June 2010 a woman took up the post of station master here, together with Yotsuya Station. She was the first woman to be a station master in Tokyo for the national railway and JR. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 14 November 2014. Station work was outsourced on 15 May 2017. Eki-net Q Ticket service started on 1 October 2025.
