Takasaki Station (高崎駅) is in Takasaki, Gunma. East Japan Railway Company, Japan Freight Railway Company and Jōshin Electric Railway operate it. The lines served are the Hachikō Line, the Takasaki Line and the Ryōmō Line. It opened on 1 May 1884.
History
Takasaki Station (高崎駅) opened on 1 May 1884 as a station of the Nippon Railway, with the line from Shinmachi to Takasaki. On 20 August 1884 the Nippon Railway line was extended to Maebashi. On 15 October 1885 the government railway opened to Yokokawa, now part of the Shinetsu Line. On 10 May 1897 the Ueno Railway line opened to Fukushima, now Jōshin-Fukushima. In 1900 the station was rebuilt in a second building. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised. On 6 July 1917 the third station building was completed.
On 23 May 1930 a third platform was added, now platforms 5 and 6. On 13 November 1934 the army held a special maneuver in Gunma, and the Emperor's special train arrived and departed here for several days. On 6 October 1935 the north overpass was extended. On 25 March 1946 Emperor Shōwa visited Gunma on a postwar tour, and a special train ran from Harajuku to Takasaki. On 18 November 1946 the east exit opened.
On 1 October 1965 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened. On 20 August 1966 an underpass replaced the Nakaizumi level crossing, and the east side of a platform became a freight container base. In November 1976 construction started on the Jōetsu Shinkansen. On 1 March 1982 the new station building was completed. On 14 April 1982 the Takasaki Montorey building opened. On 15 November 1982 the Jōetsu Shinkansen opened, and the south overpass became a free passage.
On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up, and the station became part of JR East and JR Freight. On 3 December 1994 freight train services ended, apart from transport to Jōshin Electric Railway. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable. On 1 December 2001 the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line began. On 3 July 2005 the two ticket gates were merged into one, which ended the connecting service with Jōshin Electric Railway. On 1 October 1997 the Nagano Shinkansen opened.
On 14 March 2015 the Nagano Shinkansen was renamed the Hokuriku Shinkansen, after the Nagano to Kanazawa section opened. On 19 March 2020 the Station Booth, a shared office in the station, opened at E'site Takasaki. On 31 March 2020 the Bu Plaza closed. On 3 July 2020 the Shinkansen platforms adopted a departure melody arranged from songs by Tomoyasu Hotei.
