Takatsuki Station (高槻駅) opened on 26 July 1876 with the government railway between Mukōmachi and Osaka, as a general station. On 1 April 1895 the line was named and became part of the Tōkaidō Line; later it was the Tōkaidō Main Line. In March 1956 the Takatsuki electric train depot was set up, . On 1 October 1957 the full quadruple track between Kyoto and Osaka was restored, and the station became a stop for rapid trains.
On 1 July 1979 the elevated station building came into use, the south side redevelopment was finished, and the Green Plaza Takatsuki was completed. On 15 November 1982 freight handling ended. On 14 March 1985 a timetable change made daytime rapid trains between here and Kyoto into local trains. On 31 March 1987 freight handling restarted, but no freight was handled after that. On 1 April 1987 the JNR station became part of JR West and JR Freight. On 13 March 1988 the Kyoto–Kobe section was given the name JR Kyoto Line.
On 10 March 1990 the daytime Shinkaisoku began stopping here. On 8 March 1997 all Shinkaisoku trains stopped here all day. On 5 July 1997 automatic ticket gates came into use. On 1 November 2003 ICOCA became usable. On 27 February 2004 the Act Amore complex opened on the north side, linked to the station concourse by a new pedestrian deck. On 31 March 2005 the north-side redevelopment was completed.
On 17 April 2013 JR West announced a dedicated Shinkaisoku platform, and construction began on 2 May 2013. On 26 March 2016 new platforms came into use for the Shinkaisoku and the Haruka limited express, which stopped here for the first time on a regular timetable. The new platforms had movable platform doors, and the Shinkaisoku and local trains stopped connecting. On 16 July 2016 stainless steel safety fences were installed on the older platforms. On 12 February 2016 the city announced that platform doors would be added to the existing platforms.
On 4 March 2017 some Thunderbird limited express trains began stopping here. On 17 March 2018 station numbering was introduced. On 18 June 2018 the northern Osaka earthquake damaged the concourse, with leaks and fallen lights. Movable platform doors came into use on 26 January 2019, on 16 March 2019, on 27 November 2020, and on 19 February 2021, one platform at a time. On 20 January 2022 work began on the north station plaza. On 25 March 2023 the north plaza escalators opened, and the work was complete. On 17 November 2024 the north-west exit was renamed Shōgikaikan-guchi (将棋会館口).
