Tamachi Station (田町駅) is a ground station with an elevated station building in Minato, Tokyo. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Yamanote Line and the Keihin–Tōhoku Line. It opened on 16 December 1909.
History
Tamachi began as a temporary stop. On 1 December 1876, a temporary stop opened at Shiba-Tamachi 2-chome, when the line between Shinbashi and Shinagawa was double-tracked. Only the section trains between Shinbashi and Shinagawa stopped there. On 1 September 1877, these section trains were abolished because of poor results, and the temporary stop closed.
On 16 December 1909, Tamachi Station opened with the Shinagawa to Karasumori section of the Tōkaidō Main Line. It handled passengers only. On 1 April 1926, the Shibaura exit opened. On 21 June 1968, the Toei Subway (都営地下鉄) Mita Station opened, and through ticketing with it began. In March 1970, work started to rebuild the station as an elevated station building and to build an east-west free passage. On 1 May 1970, parcel handling ended. On 6 February 1971, the east-west free passage opened.
On 28 July 1932, an outer Yamanote train that had already arrived was being joined with extra cars when its brakes failed and it ran into the train in front. The driver of the extra cars and several passengers were hurt. On 1 June 1949, the Japanese National Railways was formed. On 15 June 1960, in the evening, a Keihin-Tōhoku Line train bound for Sakuragichō stopped after finding that the rail between Hamamatsuchō and Tamachi was broken. Staff guided passengers to walk along the track toward Tamachi. A Yokosuka Line train bound for Tokyo hit them, and four people died.
On 1 April 1987, the Japanese National Railways was split up and privatised, and the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). In 1991, a temporary ticket gate opened. On 27 September 1991, automatic ticket gates began operating. In 2000, work began to widen the east-west passage. On 18 November 2001, Suica became usable here. On 8 February 2003, the widened passage opened. On 16 March 2003, because of construction, outer Yamanote trains ran past the station without stopping from the morning until the last train.
On 28 February 2023, the Midori no Madoguchi ticket window closed. On 1 October 2025, the Eki-net Q-Ticket service started here.
