History
Hamamatsuchō Station (浜松町駅) opened on 16 December 1909 with the Tōkaidō Line between Shinagawa and Karasumori (烏森). It was a passenger-only station. On 20 December 1914 Keihin Line electric trains began running. On 8 May 1955 a second platform was built, separating the north and south platforms. On 19 November 1956 the Keihin-Tōhoku Line and the Yamanote Line began to run separately.
On 17 September 1964 Tokyo Monorail's Hamamatsuchō station opened. On 1 October 1964 the Toei Asakusa Line (then Line 1) opened its Daimon station for transfers. In November 1965 Tokyo Monorail paid for a JR south gate and a footbridge linking JR and the monorail. On 1 October 1968 parcel handling at the JNR station ended. In September 1974 the monorail platform was extended to its present length.
In March 1984 an elevated station building was installed at JR Hamamatsuchō. The footbridge, completed the year before, won the Tanaka Prize from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. On 1 April 1987 the JNR station became part of JR East, and the freight line through here was reorganised. On 13 March 1988 rapid service on the Keihin-Tōhoku Line began, and rapid trains now pass through during the day. On 25 December 1992 JR installed automatic gates. On 1 October 1996 the Tōkaidō freight line between Shinagawa and here closed.
On 30 January 1998 the Ōshio freight branch between here and Tokyo Freight Terminal was suspended for Toei Ōedo Line works. On 15 November 1998 the MCAT (Monorail Hamamatsuchō City Air Terminal) opened on the third floor of the monorail station. On 12 December 2000 the Ōedo Line Daimon station opened. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable on JR. On 21 April 2002 Suica became usable on the monorail. On 14 July 2002 Keihin-Tōhoku Line rapid trains began stopping here. On 19 July 2003 a link passage between JR and the monorail was built. On 30 September 2010 the MCAT closed.
On 31 October 2012 the View Plaza JR ticket office closed. On 28 March 2020 platform doors came into use on some JR platforms. On 31 August 2023 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. On 6 March 2025 a new south free passage and south (Shibaura) exit opened. JR East planned a new north ticket gate, a west–east free passage and a south passage repair within the 2026 fiscal year. The monorail station rebuild is planned to finish in December 2029.
