Tsuruta Station is a ground-level station in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, on the Nikko Line, run by East Japan Railway Company. It opened on 13 September 1902.
History
Before Tsuruta opened, Togami Station (砥上駅) stood a little further west. It was closed when Tsuruta Station opened in 1902. Tsuruta opened on 13 September 1902 as a Nippon Railway (日本鉄道) station for passengers only.
Freight handling began on 16 March 1903. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalized and the station passed to the Railway Ministry. Passenger baggage and small parcel handling ended on 15 March 1970. Small parcel handling resumed on 1 October 1974 and ended again on 1 May 1976. Car freight handling ended on 1 February 1984.
Car freight handling resumed for railway vehicles only on 31 March 1987. On 1 April 1987 the station was split between East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company. On 1 April 2003 the freight station closed and freight ended.
A reserved-seat ticket machine started on 31 January 2008. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office (みどりの窓口) closed on 29 February 2008. Suica became usable on 15 March 2008, when the Tokyo commuter area was extended. A new station building opened on 14 March 2014.
