Ushiku Station (牛久駅) is a station in Ushiku, Ibaraki. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It opened on 25 December 1896.
History
Ushiku Station opened on 25 December 1896 as a station of the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised and the station came under the government railway. On 12 October 1909 the station became part of the Jōban Line under the new line-naming rules. Japanese National Railways was formed on 1 June 1949.
Freight handling ended on 1 October 1971. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. In 1984 the station building was rebuilt over the tracks, and this is the current building. On 1 April 1987 the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Escalators were installed on the east and west sides on 4 March 1994. Automatic ticket gates opened on 11 February 1995.
On 15 March 1996 a small station building called Astea (アステア) opened on the west side. The Suica IC card became usable on 18 November 2001. New automatic ticket gates were installed on 26 March 2006. On 1 December 2007 the departure melodies changed to 'O Champs-Élysées' and 'Green Green'. Elevators between the platforms and the gates were installed on 20 March 2008.
The east station plaza was renovated in July 2016. On 1 November 2020 station operations were outsourced. On 12 March 2022 a timetable revision set the limited express stops here at seven down trains and four up trains a day, running through the day. This matched Ryūgasaki-shi Station.
