Yamanashi-shi Station (山梨市駅) is a ground-level station with a station building over the tracks, in Yamanashi city, Yamanashi Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It opened on 11 June 1903 as Kusakabe Station (日下部駅).
History
The station opened on 11 June 1903 as Kusakabe Station, when the Chūō Line between Hatsukano (now Kai-Yamato) and Kōfu opened. Freight and passenger handling began on the same day. On 15 January 1962 the station was renamed Yamanashi-shi. On 15 November 1982 freight handling ended. On 14 March 1985 luggage handling ended. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East).
On 16 October 2004 Suica became usable, and the station joined the Tokyo commuter area. In December 2004 a station square, Yume no Mi Square (夢の実広場), was completed as part of a land readjustment project in the town. On 16 December 2005 the station building renovation was completed. On 26 February 2007 a reserved-seat ticket machine was installed. On 28 February 2017 the Midori no Madoguchi closed.
On 28 August 2017 work began to rebuild the station as a station building over the tracks. In January 2018 the station moved to a temporary station building. On 16 March 2019 all limited express Azusa trains began passing through the station, and only Kaiji stopped. On 2 March 2020 the new station building over the tracks, the north-south free passage and part of the north exit opened. On 14 March 2020 Azusa stops resumed, for some morning and evening trips.
On 12 February 2021 the south exit opened. On 24 April 2022 the south exit square came into use.
