Yamazaki Station (山崎駅) is a ground-level station in Ōyamazaki, Kyoto Prefecture. West Japan Railway Company runs it. It opened on 9 August 1876 as a government railway station between Mukōmachi and Takatsuki.
History
Yamazaki Station opened on 9 August 1876 on the government railway between Mukōmachi and Takatsuki, handling passengers and freight. On 1 April 1895 the line was named, and the station became part of the Tōkaidō Line, later renamed the Tōkaidō Main Line. The current station building was completed in October 1927.
On 1 October 1971 freight handling ended. On 1 February 1984 luggage handling ended. On 14 March 1985 the inner platform was enlarged to take longer trains, when rapid trains began stopping here in the daytime. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to West Japan Railway Company (JR West). In March 1988 the name JR Kyoto Line came into use.
On 27 June 1997 automatic ticket gates opened. On 29 July 2002 the Kyoto and Kobe Lines operation control system was introduced. On 1 November 2003 ICOCA became usable. On 18 March 2007 the station's announcement system was updated. On 12 March 2015 an approach melody was introduced.
On 9 December 2016 a new sign marking the Kyoto and Osaka prefectural border was installed. On 2 March 2018 the Midori no Madoguchi closed. On 3 March 2018 a Midori ticket machine plus began operating. On 17 March 2018 station numbering was introduced. On 24 March 2021 lifts linking each platform with the ticket gates came into use. On 1 April 2021 the station was outsourced to JR West Transport Service.
