History
The Tokyo Underground Railway station opened on 30 December 1927. On 24 May 1931 the Tobu Building was completed. On 25 May 1931 the Tobu Railway station opened as Asakusa Kaminarimon Station (浅草雷門駅), and it became a transfer station. On 1 August 1931 an underground passage between the Tobu and Tokyo Underground Railway stations was completed.
On 1 September 1941 the Tokyo Underground Railway transferred its lines to the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan Subway), under the Land Transport Business Adjustment Law. On 10 March 1945 the Tokyo Great Air Raid burned the inside of the Tobu Railway station building. On 1 October 1945 the Tobu Railway station was renamed Asakusa Station. On 8 November 1960 the Eidan three-track tunnel was extended about 196 m to the north. A storage track for 31 cars was built. On 4 December 1960 a station of the Toei Subway Line 1 opened. On 1 June 1961 through-ticketing with the Toei Subway began. On 1 May 1963 a transfer passage to Toei Subway Line 1 was built at the south end of Ginza Line platform 1.
On 15 August 1965 platform 1 at Tobu Asakusa Station was extended by 37 m, to 144 m. It could then take six 20 m cars. On 1 July 1978 Toei Subway Line 1 was renamed the Asakusa Line. On 1 April 2004 the Ginza Line stations passed to Tokyo Metro, when the Eidan Subway was privatized. On 18 March 2006 the Tobu Railway timetable changed. The semi-express was renamed section express, and semi-express trains starting and ending at this station were ended. On 18 March 2007 PASMO became usable on Tobu Railway, Tokyo Metro and the Toei Subway.
On 14 October 1997 the station was chosen for the Kanto region list of 100 stations (関東の駅百選). The Teito Rapid Transit Authority said its temple-style design fits the character of Asakusa. Tobu Railway noted that the station opened in 1931 as Asakusa Kaminarimon Station, with a department store above it. The Toei Subway was not included. Around January 2009 a fence was installed on Tobu Asakusa platform 5. On 22 January 2010 a new ticket gate for Kaminarimon and Senso-ji (浅草寺) was set up near the middle of Ginza Line platform 2. Around September 2010 a fence was installed on Tobu Asakusa platform 3. On 29 September 2011 the down-side two cars of Tobu Asakusa platform 2 became off-limits, and door cutting began for those cars. On 18 May 2012 the exterior renovation of Tobu Asakusa Station was completed. On 21 November 2012 the commercial facility Asakusa Ekimise opened in the Tobu Asakusa station building.
On 16 March 2013 the timetable changed. Daytime general trains to and from this station, except limited express, rapid and section rapid trains, became local trains only. Daytime general trains therefore only ran trains that stay within Tokyo. On 21 April 2017 rapid and section rapid trains starting and ending at this station were stopped. On 24 June 2017 platform doors began to be used on the Ginza Line platforms. On 15 July 2023 Tobu Asakusa platform 5 opened as the dedicated platform for the limited express Spacia X. The information counter and other facilities were also renovated. On 17 November 2023 the platform 5 departure melody changed from 'passenger' to an arranged version of the Spacia X in-car chime. On 23 May 2026 the transfer lift and the lift to street level near Tawaramachi Station on the Ginza Line platform began operating.
