History

Azumabashi Station (吾妻橋駅) opened on 1 April 1902. On 1 March 1910 it was renamed Asakusa Station (浅草駅). On 28 July 1910 the Tokyo Railway opened its Narihira line extension to Asakusa-ekimae, where it linked with the city tram. In 1911 Tokyo city bought the Tokyo Railway, and the Tokyo Municipal Electric Bureau was formed. On 25 May 1931 the station was renamed Narihirabashi Station (業平橋駅). On 25 June 1931 the city tram stop closed, and Tobu's Tokyo terminal moved to Asakusa Kaminarimon Station (浅草雷門駅).

On 15 November 1949 the Tokyo Concrete Industry plant began work inside the station grounds. It was Japan's first ready-mixed concrete plant. In 1955 the station dock was filled in. On 25 September 1990 a ground-level platform for 10-car trains was built on the unused sidings, and an underground passage to Oshiage Station was added. On 25 March 1993 freight train services ended. In October 2007 the concrete plant closed.

On 19 March 2003 Oshiage Station opened on the Hanzōmon Line (Tokyo Metro). The ground platform and the passage to Oshiage were removed, and longer trains began running through to the Hanzōmon and Den-en-toshi lines. On 11 August 2011 renovation began, and the ticket gate was moved. The station was renamed Tokyo Skytree Station in 2012, before the tower opened. On 20 April 2012 the renovation was finished. On 22 May 2012 Tokyo Skytree Town opened. On 16 March 2013 more trains began stopping here.

On 21 April 2017 all express trains began stopping here. On 23 March 2019 the platform was extended toward Asakusa for the elevated track. On 27 November 2022 the up line was elevated, and a new up platform and west gate came into use. On 18 March 2023 the no-extra-fare ride from here to Asakusa ended. On 7 December 2024 a new down platform and new east gate opened, and the two concourses were merged. On 2 March 2025 the down line between here and Hikifune was elevated, which removed the level crossings.
