Chigasaki Station (茅ケ崎駅) in Chigasaki, Kanagawa, is run by East Japan Railway Company and serves the Sagami Line and the Tōkaidō Line. It opened on 15 June 1898.
History
The station opened on 15 June 1898 as a station on the Tokaido Main Line (東海道本線), handling passengers and freight. The Sagami Railway's Sagami Line opened here on 28 September 1921. On 1 June 1944 the Sagami Line was nationalised and became part of the Transport and Communications Ministry's network, later Japanese National Railways.
On 15 May 1959, in the afternoon, a freight train derailed inside the station. An up Shonan train then hit it and was derailed and overturned. A group of junior high school students on a school trip were injured. An extra overbridge was built on 20 September 1966. Wagon freight handling stopped on 1 February 1984.
The station was rebuilt as a bridge station on 15 December 1984. Luggage handling stopped on 14 March 1985. The station building Chigasaki Lumine (茅ヶ崎ルミネ) opened on 19 April 1985. JR East took over on 1 April 1987. On 3 December 1994 a platform for the Shonan Liner was set up on the former freight track, and the passenger platforms became the fifth and sixth.
Work on the north bus terminal began around October 1996 and was completed on 1 October 1998. Suica came to the station on 18 November 2001. On 1 March 2006 Chigasaki Lumine was renamed Chigasaki Lasca (茅ヶ崎ラスカ). On 1 March 2009 an airport bus to Narita Airport began running from the north bus terminal.
On 1 October 2014 the melody for the fifth and sixth platforms changed to the Southern All Stars' 'Kibō no Wadachi' (希望の轍). On 28 September 2021 the first and second platforms got Yūzō Kayama's 'Umi Sono Ai' (海 その愛). That melody ended on 11 March 2022, when the Sagami Line became one-man operation. On 30 April 2015 the Viewplaza (びゅうプラザ) closed, and on 20 November 2015 the expansion of the Lasca station building was completed. In late September 2023 a temporary limited express, Ebōshi (えぼし), ran from Tokyo Station to Chigasaki for a Southern All Stars concert at Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium.
