The station opened as Kawagoe-machi Station on the Jōbu Railway, and was locally known as Rokkenchō Station because the people of Rokkenchō donated land to attract the station, although most of the railway grounds were located in Tanomasu Village, with only the station forecourt being in Kawagoe-machi.
