History
Tojo Railway (東上鉄道) opened the station on 1 April 1915, under the name Kawagoe-Nishimachi Station (川越西町駅). On 27 July 1920, Tojo Railway merged into Tobu Railway, and the station became part of the Tobu Tojo Line.
On 22 July 1940, the national railway opened Kawagoe Station on the Kawagoe Line. Tobu Railway ran it under contract and renamed its own station Kawagoe. In October 1961, Tobu extended the usable length of its platforms. On 1 June 1976, the national railway ended freight service here. On 1 November 1976, Tobu's platforms could take 10-car trains, and a footbridge opened. On 1 February 1984, the national railway ended luggage handling.
On 30 September 1985, the Kawagoe Line was electrified and began through running with the Saikyo Line. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and the Kawagoe Line station became a JR East station. On 1 February 1989, JR East ended its contract with Tobu Railway and began running the station itself. On 16 May 1990, the east redevelopment building Atre opened. Tobu's elevated station building partly opened, along with an east-west passage. On 1 April 1991, JR East's elevated station building opened, with automatic ticket gates.
On 18 November 2001, JR East began accepting the Suica IC card. On 19 February 2004, JR East carried out a large renovation. Ticket counters moved, an extra staircase was added toward Omiya, and Lumine Kawagoe opened on the Kawagoe Line platform. On 18 March 2007, Tobu began accepting PASMO. On 20 September 2007, Tobu's shopping area Fine Kawagoe (ファイン川越) was renewed as Ekia Kawagoe. On 18 March 2008, departure melodies were added to the Tobu Tojo platforms. On 26 March 2014, the west station square was finished, and a pedestrian deck opened. On 18 March 2018, platform doors came into use on the Tobu Tojo platforms. On 16 March 2019, the Kawagoe Express (川越特急) began stopping here, and the Tobu Tojo platform melody was changed.
Around July 2020, JR East renewed the station. The ticket gate exterior and the Midori no Madoguchi were improved, and the ticket machines were moved. On 11 July 2020, a tourist information corner opened inside the JR gates. On 14 February 2022, a reserved-seat ticket machine with voice guidance was introduced, and the Midori no Madoguchi became a temporary window.
