History
On 23 September 1908 the Yokohama Railway opened its line from Higashi-Kanagawa to Hachiōji, but no station was set up near the present site. On 14 February 1926 the Tokyo Yokohama Electric Railway opened its Kikuna Station. On 1 September 1926 the Railway Ministry opened its own Kikuna Station. In March 1927 the Kikuna connecting line opened.
In September 1966 the Kikuna connecting line was removed. On 1 April 1970 the JR station began handling passengers only. On 27 July 1972 the tracks were raised to stop Tokyu's tracks from flooding in heavy rain. The Yokohama Line platforms changed from side platforms to island platforms at the same time. The station building was rebuilt as an elevated station with more tracks and a pulling track. That pulling track was used only in emergencies until the through service began.
In 1974 a Tokyu Store branch opened inside the station building. From 1 April 1982 the large express trains began running, and the doors of these trains were not opened at this station on the Toyoko Line. On 1 April 1987 the JR station became part of JR East, while Tokyu continued to manage it. On 9 August 1988 the Hibiya Line through trains were extended to Kikuna, because work at Hiyoshi Station was under way, and express trains began connecting here at other times too.
In December 1989 a grade-separation project began between Okurayama and Kikuna, so the Toyoko Line crossings could be removed. On 23 March 1993 the Okurayama No. 3 crossing next to the station closed. On 31 March 1993 the non-handling of the Shibuya-side car ended, and from the next day all cars opened their doors. On 17 March 1995 the platforms and the pedestrian overpass were finished, which completed the grade-separation project that had taken a little over five years.
On 28 March 2001 express services began, and the station became a stop for all-day connections between express and slow trains. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable on JR. In March 2006 Kikuna became a stop for rapid trains on the Yokohama Line. On 23 August 2007 the Hibiya Line through trains ran only as far as Kikuna all day, because of work at Hiyoshi. On 15 March 2013 the Hibiya Line through service ended here when the Toyoko Line and the Fukutoshin Line began through running the next day. On 21 March 2016 platform doors came into use on the down platform, and on 20 March 2017 on the up platform. On 17 December 2017 the new station building opened with a west exit lift, and the JR connecting gate closed. On 7 November 2021 smart platform doors came into use on the Yokohama Line platforms. On 20 December 2021 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed.
