History
The station opened on 1 October 1964 at the junction with the Yokohama Line, when the Tokaido Shinkansen opened. The Yokohama Line was doubled from Kikuna to here on 22 October 1967, and from here to Kozukue on 4 February 1968. The Shinkansen platforms were extended for 16-car trains in 1970. Escalators were added to the down Shinkansen platform on 1 November 1973. Some Hikari trains began stopping on 1 July 1976.
The Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line opened from Yokohama station to here on 14 March 1985, and this station became its terminus. Japanese National Railways was split up on 1 April 1987, and the Shinkansen passed to JR Central and the Yokohama Line to JR East. The Yokohama Line Kaisoku began on 13 March 1988, and Nozomi trains began on 14 March 1992. The subway was extended to Azamino on 18 March 1993. The station was renovated, and the Shinkansen and Yokohama Line gates were fitted with automatic ticket gates and IC card readers on 3 October 1998.
The station was selected for a Kanto station list in 2000. Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. During the 2002 World Cup, a Kodama train from here to Tokyo was run, and late-night trains were added. PASMO could be used on the subway from 18 March 2007. From 15 March 2008 all Nozomi and Hikari trains stopped here, so every Tokaido Shinkansen train now stops. A Hikari for Hiroshima also started here that day.
The subway's melody was changed to the Yokohama F. Marinos cheer song on 10 July 2014. A subway rapid service began stopping here on 18 July 2015. Platform doors were installed on all Shinkansen platforms from 1 March 2018. Platform doors came into use on the Yokohama Line on 3 November 2021. A central ticket gate was added on the subway on 11 March 2023. The Sotetsu Shin-Yokohama Line and the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line opened on 18 March 2023, and a Nozomi started from here to Shin-Osaka that day as a special service.
From 1 April 2025 the Yokohama Line ticket gate on the north side was taken over by JR East from JR Central. The Shinohara gate became unstaffed, with an intercom service for passengers. The JR East multi-function and reserved-seat machines were moved from the Shinohara gate to the north side. On 10 October 2025 a design error in the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line signal control was found.
