Koenji Station (高円寺駅) is an elevated station in Suginami, Tokyo. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Chūō Line (Rapid) and the Chūō–Sōbu Line (Local). It opened on 15 July 1922.
History
The station opened on 15 July 1922 as a passenger station of the Railway Ministry. On 25 May 1945 the Tokyo air raid burned the station building, and it was repaired temporarily. Japanese National Railways was formed on 1 June 1949. On 29 December 1952 the temporary building was replaced by a full station building.
Parcel handling ended on 16 April 1962. On 20 September 1964 the double track was raised onto an elevated structure, and the south exit moved to a temporary station building on 16 December 1964. The north exit closed on 15 January 1965 for the elevated works. The elevated multi-track structure was completed on 3 April 1966. On 28 April 1966 the Chūō–Sōbu local trains were extended from Nakano to Ogikubo and began through-running with the Tōzai Line.
An escalator was installed on the rapid platforms on 29 September 1975. JR East took over on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates opened on 21 January 1992. On 3 December 1994 Saturdays were added to the days when rapid trains pass this station. Around June 1995 the local platforms got escalators.
Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. From August 2004 the local platforms used a melody arranged from Awa Odori dance music, and from 1 August 2016 it was used all year.
The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 18 March 2022. Eki-net Q-ticket service began on 1 October 2025. Sliding-frame platform doors were planned for the local platforms within fiscal year 2026. Smart platform doors started on the rapid platforms on 15 June 2026.
