The Japanese National Railways Sōbu Main Line's Makuhari-Hongō Station opened, with only passenger services, on the same day the Sōbu Line's quadruple track was extended to Chiba Station and Higashi-Funabashi Station also opened, and the provisional station name had been Nishi-Makuhari.
