Meiji-Jingumae Station (明治神宮前駅) is an underground station in Shibuya, Tokyo. Tokyo Metro runs it. It serves the Chiyoda Line and the Fukutoshin Line. It opened on 20 October 1972.
History
In 1962 a transport council report defined a planned Tokyo subway line. On 6 December 1964 the Ministry of Construction confirmed the line, and it was decided that a station called Harajuku (原宿駅, a tentative name) would be built. During construction in 1972 the fossil remains of a Naumann's elephant were dug up. The station opened on 20 October 1972 as part of the Chiyoda Line between Kasumigaseki and Yoyogi-Koen. Transfers to JR's Harajuku Station began on the same day. When the station opened, the Ginza Line's Jingumae Station was renamed Omotesando Station (表参道駅).
On 1 November 1973 commuter pass machines were introduced, at the same time as at Nakano-Sakaue and Kokkai-Gijidomae stations. In 2002 air conditioning was added to the station in the summer. On 1 April 2004 the station passed to Tokyo Metro when the Teito Rapid Transit Authority was privatised. On 18 March 2007 PASMO became usable.
On 14 June 2008 the Fukutoshin Line station opened, and it was air-conditioned from the start. On 6 March 2010 signs began to show the station as Meiji-Jingumae (Harajuku). Express trains began stopping on Saturdays and holidays on the Fukutoshin Line. On 28 March 2016 express trains began stopping on weekdays as well.
On 27 October 2018 departure melodies were introduced on the Chiyoda Line platforms. On 18 March 2023 Fukutoshin Line commuter express trains began to stop here. From that change, every train except the S-TRAIN stops here. On 26 April 2024 the commuter pass counter closed.
