Omote-sando Station (表参道駅) is an underground station in Minato, Tokyo, run by Tokyo Metro. Its lines are the Chiyoda Line, the Ginza Line and the Hanzōmon Line, and it opened on 18 November 1938.
History
The station opened on 18 November 1938 as Aoyama Rokuchome Station, run by the Tokyo Rapid Railway in Aoyama Kita-cho, Akasaka ward. It was renamed Jingumae Station on 16 September 1939. On 1 September 1941, the Tokyo Rapid Railway merged into the Teito Rapid Transit Authority, known as Eidan, the subway operator.
In August 1954, expansion of the station was approved. On 1 May 1955, to add capacity on the Ginza Line, the first car of four-car trains at the Asakusa end was closed off. Platforms were extended for longer trains on 1 July 1957, which ended the closing-off.
On 20 October 1972 the Chiyoda Line opened its Omote-sando Station, and the Ginza Line's Jingumae Station was renamed Omote-sando to match. The Hanzomon Line opened on 1 August 1978. At the same time the Ginza Line platform was moved a short distance toward Asakusa Station.
Tokyo Metro took over the station on 1 April 2004, when the subway was privatized. Echika Omotesando, a shopping area inside the station, opened on 2 December 2005. PASMO became usable on 18 March 2007. On 15 March 2008, Odakyu Romancecar trains began running through to the Chiyoda Line.
In December 2017 the old Jingumae station site was lit up for a limited-period subway anniversary event. From September to November 2018, departure melodies were introduced on the Hanzomon, Chiyoda and Ginza platforms, in that order.
