Minami-Hashimoto Station (南橋本駅) is in Chūō Ward, Sagamihara. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Sagami Line. It opened on 1 November 1932.
History
The station opened on 1 November 1932 as Ōkawara Stop (大河原停留場) on the Sagami Railway (相模鉄道). In 1940 the name was changed to Sagamimachi Stop (相模町停留場). On 1 April 1941 it was upgraded to a station named Sagamimachi Station (相模町駅).
On 1 June 1944 the Sagami Railway was bought by the government during the war and nationalised. The station became part of the Sagami Line of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, later Japanese National Railways. It was renamed Minami-Hashimoto Station (南橋本駅) at the same time. On 1 April 1987 the national railway was privatised, and the station passed to JR East and Japan Freight Railway Company. On 6 July 1992 a diesel locomotive hauling a freight train and several wagons derailed on the points on the Hashimoto side of the station yard.
Mitsubishi Cement had a private line to its packing plant and facilities here, and cement was moved by freight train. The last freight trains arrived and left on 13 March 1996. The freight station of JR Freight closed on 1 July 1997, and freight handling ended.
Automatic ticket gates were brought into use on 4 March 1997. In November 2000 a fare display error between Minami-Hashimoto and Yadorigawara Station on the Nambu Line was found. This was the start of the JR fare display problem. The Ministry of Transport, now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, surveyed the whole country and found similar display errors at many other stations across the country. Suica IC card use began on 18 November 2001.
The east-west free passage opened on 1 October 2006. On 15 November 2007 the fourth gate from the staffed gates, at the east end, was replaced with a Suica-only machine. Station area works were completed in March 2008. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 29 February 2012. The elevated station building opened on 3 October 2021.
