Mishima Station (三島駅) is a ground-level station in Mishima, Shizuoka. JR Central runs the Tokaido Shinkansen here. Izuhakone Railway also runs a line through the station. The station opened on 1 December 1934, and the Shinkansen stop on 25 April 1969.

History

The second Mishima station opened on 1 December 1934, when the Tanna Tunnel changed the route of the Tokaido Main Line to here. The Sunto Railway, now the Izuhakone Railway Sunto Line, also began running into it. In April 1952 the Emperor and Empress's special train stopped here during the national tree-planting festival in Kanbara.

A group to press for a new Shinkansen station was formed on 8 April 1965. A Shinkansen signal station opened on 27 September 1965, with a turnback line and a siding. The national railway board decided on 8 November 1967 to build a station here. Work on the station building began on 9 April 1968 and was finished on 4 April 1969. The Shinkansen station opened on 25 April 1969, replacing the signal station.

The Shinkansen platform was extended for 16-car trains in 1970. Rail freight was cut back on 1 October 1974, and the freight that came in on the Izuhakone line ended on 1 February 1984. Parcel handling ended on 1 November 1986. On 1 April 1987 the national railway passed to JR Central and JR Freight. An escalator was added to the underpass on 1 March 1992, and automatic ticket gates were installed on the conventional lines on 6 February 1993.
