Atami Station (熱海駅) is in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Central Japan Railway Company both run it. It serves the Itō Line, the Tōkaidō Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen, and it opened on 25 March 1925.
History
Before the station, a human-powered railway (人車鉄道) opened in 1895 as far as Yoshihama, and it reached Odawara the next year. Steam locomotives began to run between Odawara and Atami in 1907. The Great Kanto Earthquake closed the Atami tramway line on 1 September 1923, and the line was later abolished. The Ministry of Railways opened Atami Station on 25 March 1925, when the Yugawara to Atami section of the Atami Line opened. On 26 November 1930, the North Izu earthquake struck before dawn, and a water tank in the station yard collapsed. The Atami Line was merged into the Tōkaidō Line on 1 December 1934, and the Itō Line opened between Atami and Ajiro on 30 March 1935.
The Tokaido Shinkansen began to stop here when it opened on 1 October 1964. Freight handling ended on 1 September 1966. The Shinkansen platforms were lengthened in 1970 to take longer trains. On 1 September 1974, movable platform doors were installed on the Shinkansen platforms, the first in Japan. Luggage handling ended on 1 November 1986. On 1 April 1987, the station was split between the two operators: JR East took the conventional lines toward Tokyo and on the Itō Line, and JR Central took the Tōkaidō Line toward Shizuoka and the Shinkansen.
Ticketing and gates were changed from 1997 to 2012. The transfer gates between the Shinkansen and the conventional lines were combined into one during a renovation in 1997. Automatic ticket gates opened on the conventional lines on 4 February 1998, and a middle gate between the Shinkansen and the conventional lines opened on 24 February 1998. Suica became usable at JR East on 18 November 2001, in the Tokyo direction only, and on the Itō Line on 16 October 2004. The CTC signal control centre for the Itō Line moved to the station in 2006. The Atami Rasuka station building closed on 31 March 2010. A temporary bus stop opened in April 2011, and in November 2011 a temporary station building partly opened. Redevelopment of the station square resumed on 15 February 2012.
The new station building was built from 2014 to 2016. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 26 October 2014. The new station building, not counting the station complex, opened on 29 November 2015. The new station complex opened on 25 November 2016 as Rasuka Atami. Bus stops and a taxi pool were finished on 15 March 2013. The station joined the TOICA area on 13 March 2021, and an IC card commuter pass began to be sold across the two operators' IC service areas.
