History
The Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan) opened its Chiyoda Line station on 20 December 1969. At first only about half of the platform was used, because of work on a national railway bridge, so the trains were short. The station fully opened on 20 March 1971, when the Otemachi to Kasumigaseki section opened and all station facilities came into use. The JR station opened on 20 April 1971 as a transfer point. It is the second newest Yamanote Line station, after 高輪ゲートウェイ駅.
JR East took over the station on 1 April 1987. From 13 March 1988, after rapid services began on the Keihin–Tōhoku Line, Keihin–Tōhoku trains pass through during the day. JR ticket gates were installed on 26 January 1991.
A connecting ticket gate opened on 11 November 1995. Suica became usable at JR East on 18 November 2001. On 1 April 2004 the Chiyoda Line passed to Tokyo Metro. PASMO became usable on 18 March 2007. The Nippori-Toneri Liner (日暮里・舎人ライナー), run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, opened here on 30 March 2008.
The Midori ticket window closed on 14 December 2013. Platform doors came into use on the Yamanote Line platforms on 28 June 2014. A subway platform melody was introduced on 27 October 2018. Platform doors came to the first and fourth platforms, used by the Keihin–Tōhoku Line, on 12 April 2019.
