Nippori Station (日暮里駅) is a station in Arakawa, Tokyo, where East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs the JR platforms. It opened on 1 April 1905, and its lines are the Jōban Line (Rapid), Yamanote Line, Keihin–Tōhoku Line, Keisei Main Line (KS) and Keisei Skyliner.
History
The station opened on 1 April 1905, when the Nippon Railway section between Mikawashima Station and Nishi-Nippori Station opened. This completed the present route. On 1 November 1906 Nippon Railway was nationalized, and the station was also nationalized. On 12 October 1909 the line was placed under the Tōhoku Main Line. Around 1928 the station was moved from a spot north of its present site to where it is now.
On 19 December 1931 a station of the Keisei Electric Railway opened here. On 18 June 1952 a panel on the south overbridge of Japanese National Railways (JNR), facing track 10, broke, and passengers fell. A train then came in, and 8 people died. On 13 August 1954 JNR began construction to ease crowding. It cut back the slope under Yanaka Cemetery and began building new platforms for tracks 11 and 12. JNR began using platforms 11 and 12 on 5 May 1955. On 11 September 1956 JNR began using the Central Link Passage.
From 1 January of the following year, Jōban Line commuter trains stopped running into Ueno Station and turned back at Nippori Station instead. The aim was to sort the long-distance train platforms at Ueno by destination. In 1974 the Nippori station improvement project began. Its first work moved the existing tracks, so that a Shinkansen route could fit inside the station. In 1977 two conventional-line platforms on the Tōhoku Main Line and Takasaki Line were removed. Platform numbers 5 to 8 are no longer used. In December 1979 the plan to extend the Shinkansen to Ueno was announced, and work inside the station began. A narrow underground passage on the south side, which linked the platforms, was closed.
On 14 March 1985 JNR ended luggage handling. In 1987 JNR was privatized, and the station became a station of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). On 13 March 1988 Keihin–Tōhoku Line rapid services began. During the daytime, Keihin–Tōhoku trains now pass through this station. On 7 July 1989 JR East opened a south exit and a south ticket gate. In 1990 JR East's automatic ticket gates came into use at the south exit on 2 November and at the north exit on 22 December.
On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable on JR East. On 18 March 2007 PASMO became usable on Keisei Electric Railway. On 30 March 2008 the Nippori-Toneri Liner opened, along with a station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation. The in-station shopping facility Ecute Nippori partly opened on 20 June 2009. On 3 October 2009 the Keisei Line's down track was elevated. In 2013 the site of the old Keisei down platform was used to widen the Jōban Line platform. Platform doors came into use on Keisei platforms 1 and 2 on 24 February 2018, and on Keisei platform 0 on 23 December 2018. Ecute Nippori closed for a full renovation on 1 September 2019. It reopened after the renewal on 15 July 2020. On 26 February 2022 JR East's south ticket gate began using a customer support call system, and the outsourced work at that gate was ended. Platform doors came into use on Keihin–Tōhoku tracks 9 and 12 on 22 March 2023.
