Ohirashita Station (大平下駅) is a ground-level station in Tochigi city, Tochigi Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it and it serves the Ryōmō Line. It opened on 8 March 1895 as Tomiyama Station.
History
The station opened on 8 March 1895 as Tomiyama Station (富山駅) of the Ryōmō Railway, named after the village of Tomiyama. Matsumoto Wakushichi and others led the campaign for the station. On 1 January 1897 the line was transferred to the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906 it was nationalised. On 12 October 1909 the line was named the Ryōmō Line. On 16 October 1918 the station was renamed Ohirashita, after its position at the foot of Mount Taihei.
On 1 June 1949 the station came under the Japanese National Railways. On 1 July 1972 freight handling ended. On 1 February 1984 luggage handling ended. On 14 March 1985 the station became unstaffed, and for some years after that staff from a special ticket-checking centre checked tickets. On 1 April 1987 it passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East). In summer 2001 the passing equipment for trains was removed, and the station was reduced to a single track. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable. On 1 December 2003 the station changed from staffed to unstaffed.
On 13 September 2019 the ticket machine was replaced with a newer model. It can charge Suica, print travel history, register Go! Shinkansen touch cards and sell some discount tickets. On 13 October 2019 the station closed because of the Reiwa East Japan Typhoon, which had passed the day before. The station reopened on 11 November 2019.
