Tochigi Station (栃木駅) is an elevated station in Tochigi city, Tochigi Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Tobu Railway run it. It serves the Ryōmō Line and the Tobu Nikko Line. It opened on 22 May 1888.
History
Tochigi Station opened on 22 May 1888 as a station of the Ryōmō Railway. On 1 January 1897 the railway was transferred to the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised. On 12 October 1909 the line was named the Ryōmō Line.
In 1928 a station building in Western style was built. On 1 April 1929 the Tobu Nikko Line station opened. On 1 June 1949 the station came under the Japanese National Railways. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1984, and luggage handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 the JR station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East), and a travel centre opened.
On 17 May 2000 the Tobu Nikko Line station was elevated. On 18 November 2001 JR East began accepting Suica. On 4 April 2003 the Ryōmō Line platforms were elevated. In March 2006 the JR Midori no Madoguchi closed, and a Kaeru-kun ticket machine began operating. On 18 March 2007 Tobu began accepting PASMO. In October 2007 one-person operation started on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line, and a driver's departure melody was introduced on the Tobu platform at Tochigi.
On 10 April 2018 the departure melody on the JR Ryōmō Line platform was changed to 「栃木市民の歌 明日への希望」, the Tochigi citizens' song. On 1 May 2022 a street piano was installed in the station. It is the grand piano from the former music room of a Tochigi city junior high school.
