Sakuragicho Station (桜木町駅) is in Naka ward, Yokohama, and is served by the Negishi Line and the Yokohama Blue Line. It is run by East Japan Railway Company and the Yokohama Municipal Subway, and it opened on 12 June 1872.
History
The station first opened on 12 June 1872 as Yokohama Station, when the line opened temporarily between Shinagawa and here. Railway service officially opened between Shimbashi and here on 14 October 1872. The station building was designed by an American, リチャード・ブリジェンス (Richard Bridgens). Freight handling began on 15 September 1873. The government railway was extended to Kozu on 11 July 1887, and the station became a switchback. A tram line opened near the station on 15 July 1904. On 12 October 1909 the station joined the Tokaido Line.
On 15 August 1915 a new Yokohama Station opened, and this station was renamed Sakuragicho. The line to Hodogaya closed, which ended the switchback. Freight handling ended on 30 December 1915, and the work moved to Higashi-Yokohama station. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1 September 1923 destroyed the original station building. The building was rebuilt in 1927. The Tokyo Yokohama Electric Railway (now Tokyu) Toyoko Line opened on 31 March 1932, with this station as its terminus.
On 24 April 1951 a Keihin Line train caught fire inside the station, and many people were killed or injured. Double-tracking between Takashimacho and the station was completed on 10 September 1956. The Negishi Line was extended to Isogo on 19 May 1964. A freight branch to Takashima opened on 1 June 1964.
On 28 March 2001 Tokyu began express trains on its Toyoko Line. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The old Tokyu station ended service after the last train on 30 January 2004, when the Minatomirai Line opened, and it was abolished the next day. The old Tokyu station building was demolished in July 2013. The north ticket gate and east-west passages opened on 1 July 2014. On 16 July 2014, the CIAL Sakuragicho shopping complex and the Sakuragicho West Square opened. Platform doors began operating on 12 May 2015. Rapid trains began stopping here on 18 July 2015. The departure melody was changed to the song 'Senro wa Tsuzuku Yo Dokomademo' on 25 July 2015.
On 10 August 2018, platform doors started on some tracks. On 27 June 2020, a new south exit (City Hall exit) opened, along with the JR Sakuragicho building, which has a hotel and a shopping area. On 22 May 2025 the departure melody was changed to another melody, and the song was no longer used. On 1 February 2026, smart platform doors began on the second and third platforms.
