History
Shin-Tochigi Station (新栃木駅) opened on 1 April 1929, when the Nikko Line opened. On 11 August 1931, the Utsunomiya Line opened. On 15 September 1936, an electric train and a freight train collided head-on inside the station. Six people died and five were seriously injured. On 23 July 1974, limited express trains began stopping here, one round trip a day. On 19 August 1985, the number of limited express stops was increased. On 28 March 2001, the limited express stop moved from here to Tochigi Station, which connects with JR. Most limited express trains then passed through this station.
In July 2005, a Friday-only express called Kirifuri began running from Asakusa and ending here. On 18 March 2006, a timetable change expanded the Kirifuri service. Kegon trains began starting and ending here, with a morning up train and a night down train. Semi-express trains that started and ended here were renamed section express, and fewer of them ran. Services toward Asakusa were cut sharply, except for limited express, rapid and the new section rapid. On 18 March 2007, PASMO became usable. On 31 October 2007, a driver's departure melody was introduced as one-person operation began on the Utsunomiya Line. On 6 June 2009, a timetable change moved the end of the section express route to this station. On 17 March 2012, station numbering began here. On 16 March 2013, the section express starting and ending here was reduced to one round trip.
On 21 April 2017, Liberty Kegon trains began starting and ending here, with an early morning up train and a night down train. Rapid and section rapid services and the section express between Asakusa and this station were abolished. Ordinary trains no longer ran through onto the Isesaki Line (Tobu Skytree Line). On 6 June 2020, through running began between the Minami-Kurihashi direction and the Utsunomiya Line. Until a later timetable change, daytime Nikko Line local trains were split at this station. On 16 March 2024, the departure display boards were replaced with full-colour LED types, and automatic announcements began.
