History
The station opened on 20 January 1896 as a station on the Bōsō Railway (房総鉄道), now the Sotobō Line. It handled passengers and freight. On 1 September 1907 the Bōsō Railway was bought by the government and became part of the Imperial Railways Agency. On 28 March 1912 the Kisarazu Line, now the Uchibō Line, opened, and the station became a transfer station.
The station building was rebuilt as an elevated station in September 1961. The Rinkai Main Line of Keiyo Rinkai Tetsudo opened on 16 September 1963. On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up and privatised, and the station passed to JR East.
Passenger service began on 1 December 1988 between Chiba-Minato and Soga on the Keiyō Line. On 16 March 1991 the Keiyō Line was extended to Tokyo and the Narita Express began running. The limited expresses Sazanami and Wakashio had run to Tokyo by the Sōbu and Sotobō lines, but were moved to the Keiyō Line. All limited express trains began to stop at this station.
Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The shopping facility Dila Soga opened inside the station on 29 August 2004. On 18 November 2007 the departure melody was changed to Over, the cheer song of Jef United Ichihara Chiba. On 24 March 2016 the concourse and Dila Soga were renewed.
On 9 February 2020 signal control of the Uchibō and Sotobō lines moved to the Chiba General Control Room. On 18 November 2021 a telework booth called STATION BOOTH opened inside STATION WORK, a shared office in the station. On 4 August 2026 the sub-name Jef United Station was set for the station.
