Sugamo Station (巣鴨駅) is in Sugamo, Toshima ward, Tokyo, and is served by the Yamanote Line and the Mita Line. It is run by East Japan Railway Company and the Toei Subway (Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation), and it opened on 1 April 1903.
History
The station was already planned when the Toshima line received its licence. It opened on 1 April 1903 as a stop on the Nihon Railway's Yamanote Line, and it handled freight from the start. The Nihon Railway was nationalized on 1 November 1906. On 12 October 1909 the station became part of the Yamanote Line. On 28 December 1924 the Ikebukuro to Sugamo section was made quadruple-track, which separated the Yamanote Line from the Yamanote freight line.
In 1945, during the Pacific War, the station was hit in an air raid. On 27 December 1968, Toei's Line 6 opened from here to Shimura, now Takashimadaira. On 30 June 1972 the line was extended to Hibiya. On 1 October 1974, parcel handling at the national railway station ended. On 1 July 1978 Line 6 was renamed the Mita Line. On 31 March 1979, freight handling at the national railway station ended.
JR East took over on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 26 January 1991. A sensor-equipped platform fence was tested at Sugamo on the Mita Line from 28 April 1997. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. On 1 April 2004 the Mita Line stations were given station numbers. PASMO became usable on Toei lines on 18 March 2007. JR East began building a new station on 1 June 2007. On 18 November 2007 its ticket machines and ticket office moved to a temporary south building, and the ticket gates moved south on 9 December 2007. The north exit was closed on 11 January 2008.
The Atre Vie Sugamo shopping centre opened on 25 March 2010. JR East's platform doors started on 29 June 2013. On 15 September 2016 Yamanote Line station signs began showing the line code JY with the station number. The View Plaza travel office closed on 31 March 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 January 2023, and talking reserved-seat ticket machines were added on 1 February 2023.
