Toke Station (土気駅) is a station with a station building over the tracks in Chiba city. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It serves the Sotobō Line. It opened on 1 November 1896 as a station of the Bōsō Railway (房総鉄道).
History
The Bōsō Railway opened Toke Station on 1 November 1896, between Noda (now Honda) and Ōami. It handled passengers and freight from the start. On 1 September 1907 the Bōsō Railway was bought under the Railway Nationalisation Act, and the station became a station of the Imperial Railways Agency. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962.
In January 1979 talks began with the national railway about a south exit and a rapid-train stop. In July 1982 the prefectural and city assemblies adopted resolutions to raise the station building and to press for a rapid-train stop. In December 1984 a ground-breaking ceremony was held for the elevated station building and the north-south free passage. On 28 August 1986 the new station building was completed and the south exit opened. On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up, and the station became part of JR East.
In September 1987 some down rapid trains began to stop here. Automatic ticket gates started on 19 August 1995. On 4 December 1999 all rapid trains began to stop, with the commuter rapid service stopping here. Suica could be used from 18 November 2001.
On 30 September 2002 the limited express Wakashio and the Ohayō Wakashio began to stop here. On 21 November 2002 departure melodies and detailed automatic announcements were introduced. On 18 February 2010 LED departure displays were installed at the gates and on the platforms. The Midori no Madoguchi counter closed on 4 February 2013. On 1 April 2014 station duties were contracted out.
