Totsuka Station (戸塚駅) is in Totsuka ward, Yokohama, and is run by East Japan Railway Company and the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Its lines are the Tōkaidō Line, Yokosuka Line, Shōnan–Shinjuku Line, Yokohama Blue Line and Narita Express (N'EX), and it opened on 11 July 1887.
History
The station opened in 1887 with the Tokaido Line between Yokohama and Kozu, and it handled passengers and freight from the start. In 1929 the Tsurumi to Yokohama section was given extra tracks, and the Yokohama to Hiratsuka section was made quadruple-track, which separated freight from passenger trains. On 15 March 1930 the Yokosuka Line was electrified, and Tokaido Line trains began running through Totsuka without stopping.
A horse racecourse opened at Totsuka in 1932, and an east exit was built in 1937 for race days. On 27 July 1939, a semi-express train ran into the track area near the station, where company workers were seeing off a colleague. Fifteen people were killed or injured. The racecourse closed in 1954 and moved to Kawasaki. The raised station was completed on 26 March 1969. Freight handling ended on 1 May 1970.
The Tokaido freight line from Tsurumi through Yokohama Hazawa to Totsuka opened on 1 October 1979. On 1 October 1980 the Totsuka to Ofuna section was given extra tracks, which separated the Tokaido and Yokosuka lines, and Tokaido local trains stopped here again. Luggage handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 JR East took over, and the end of the Tsurumi branch moved from Totsuka to Higashi-Totsuka. The Yokohama Municipal Subway station became permanent on 27 August 1989, and door-cutting ended. JR East's automatic ticket gates opened at the raised concourse on 26 May 1993, and the underground gates on 9 June 1993.
The Yokohama subway extended from here to Shonandai on 29 August 1999, making Totsuka an intermediate station. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The Shōnan–Shinjuku Line began on 1 December 2001, with Narita Express stopping here. Special rapid trains on the Shonan–Shinjuku line began stopping on 16 October 2004. On 18 March 2007 the Active rapid train began stopping here, and PASMO became usable on the subway. Subway platform doors began on 18 August 2007. Docomo public wireless LAN began on 10 April 2012. On 18 July 2015 the subway's rapid trains began stopping here.
