History
Toyohashi Station (豊橋駅) opened on 1 September 1888 as a government railway station. On 15 July 1897 the Toyokawa Railway opened to Toyokawa and set up its own Toyohashi station. On 11 December 1899 that station was renamed Yoshida Station. On 12 October 1909 the government line through Toyohashi was named the Tōkaidō Line. On 10 July 1916 a new station building came into use. On 14 July 1925 the Toyohashi Electric Railway opened a stop in front of the station. On 1 June 1927 the Aichi Electric Railway's Toyohashi Line ran into Yoshida, and on 1 October 1927 the Atsumi Railway opened Shin-Toyohashi station to the south-east.
On 1 August 1935 the Aichi Electric Railway merged and became the Nagoya Railroad (名鉄). On 1 August 1943 the Toyokawa Railway was nationalised, and Yoshida station was merged into Toyohashi station, which was shared by the national railway and Meitetsu. On 20 June 1945 an air raid burned the station. The west exit reopened on 1 February 1946. On 21 October 1946 Emperor Shōwa's postwar tour passed through Toyohashi by special trains. On 16 May 1948 the Meitetsu Toyohashi Line was renamed the Nagoya Main Line. On 14 March 1950 a new Minshū (民衆) station building was completed. It was opened in a ceremony later that spring.
On 21 July 1953 the Tōkaidō Line was electrified from Hamamatsu to Nagoya, and the limited express Hato began stopping here. On 1 October 1964 the Tōkaidō Shinkansen opened, and the station became a stop. On 15 March 1970 the Shinkansen platforms were extended for longer trains. On 1 July 1970 the new Toyohashi Station Building opened. On 15 March 1987 the Futamata Line closed, and some platforms were removed. On 1 April 1987 the JNR station was taken over by JR Central and JR Freight.
On 16 September 1996 the elevated station building and east-west pedestrian passage came into use. On 9 March 1997 the Calmia shopping centre opened inside the station building. On 11 June 1997 the Hotel Associa Toyohashi opened. On 18 February 1998 automatic gates were installed for Shinkansen passengers. On 3 October 1998 JR Freight's container trains ended and were replaced by road transport. On 25 November 2006 TOICA became usable on JR Central. On 21 April 2012 TOICA and manaca became usable on each other's systems.
On 7 August 2015 the first in-station store opened on the local-line concourse, a Belmart. Later in 2015 more shops opened, including Seijo Ishii. In 2018 station numbering began, and the station was given codes for the Tōkaidō Line and the Iida Line. On 28 September 2022 the JR Tours Toyohashi branch closed. On 2 February 2026 the local-line JR ticket counters closed.
