History
Hamamatsu Station (浜松駅) opened on 1 September 1888 as the end of the government railway line from Hamamatsu to Obu. The Railway Bureau built the line. The bureau later became the Railway Ministry and then Japanese National Railways. On 16 April 1889, the line was extended to Shizuoka and linked to the existing line to Shimbashi, and Hamamatsu became a midway station. On 1 April 1895, track naming put the station on the Tokaido Line, later renamed the Tokaido Main Line. On 12 December 1926, the station building was rebuilt in a Western-style modern design. On 10 June 1945, the second station building burned in the Hamamatsu air raid. On 30 June 1945, naval gunfire destroyed a long section of track in the station yard. On 15 October 1948, a wooden third station building was completed.
On 1 October 1964, the Tokaido Shinkansen opened, and the station became a transfer station for it. On 15 March 1970, the Shinkansen platforms were extended to take longer trains. On 26 April 1971, part of the freight handling moved to the new West Hamamatsu Station. On 1 October 1976, all freight handling ended. The Tenryu Railway's Nishi-Kashima Line freight also ended that day. On 15 October 1979, the Tokaido Line was made elevated. The station then became one with the Shinkansen platforms, which were set apart from the Tokaido Line. On 1 October 1980, the Hikari Shinkansen began stopping here.
On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and the station became a JR Central station. On 1 May 1988, the station building MayOne (メイワン) opened. On 14 November 1992, automatic ticket gates were installed at the conventional line gates. In February 1996, the outside of the south exit was renovated. On 7 March 1998, automatic ticket gates were installed at the Shinkansen gates. On 16 March 2001, two elevators and two escalators were added to the conventional line platforms.
In April 2005, seismic reinforcement and improvement work began inside the station. On 11 November 2006, the in-station shopping area MayOne Ekimachi West opened. The layout changed, and the ticket office, travel centre, shops and toilets moved. On 15 March 2007, the in-station shopping area MayOne Ekimachi East opened. In June 2007, the seismic and internal improvement work was completed. In February 2008, the interlocking system was made electronic. This completed JR Central's plan to make its main stations and depots electronically interlocked. On 1 March 2008, TOICA became usable on the Tokaido Line. On 20 November 2008, a commercial complex built around the MayOne Bic Camera (メイワン ビックカメラ館) opened under the viaduct on the west side.
