Uguisudani Station (鶯谷駅) is in Taitō Ward, Tokyo. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Yamanote Line and the Keihin-Tōhoku Line. It opened on 11 July 1912.
History
The station opened on 11 July 1912 as a station of the Imperial Railways Agency on the Tōhoku Main Line. The platforms were built only for the Yamanote Line, which was already running electric trains. So in practice the station opened as a Yamanote Line station, on the service between Ueno, Tabata, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shinagawa and Torimori. On 1 November 1925 the Keihin Line was extended to Tabata over the Yamanote Line tracks, so two lines now used the station. On 19 November 1956 the double track shared by the Yamanote and Keihin-Tōhoku lines was made four-track, and the station had two platform faces.
Parcel handling ended on 1 October 1964. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. On 13 March 1988 rapid Keihin-Tōhoku Line services began, and during the day the Keihin-Tōhoku Line trains began to pass through the station without stopping.
Automatic ticket gates were brought into use at the north exit on 2 November 1990 and at the south exit on 15 December 1990. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 29 February 2004. A reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced on 1 March 2004.
On 10 April 2017 station operations were contracted out. On 20 March 2019 the north exit became unstaffed all day, when a remote station control system, now the customer support call system, was introduced.
Smart home doors began operating on platforms 1 and 4 of the Keihin-Tōhoku Line on 27 April 2024. Eki-net Q ticket service began on 1 October 2025.
