History
On 28 July 1927, the station opened as Shin-Zama Station (新座間駅). It was a stop for the through service (直通). Local trains ran only between Shinjuku and Inada-Noboribe (now Mukaigaoka-Yuen Station), and they did not reach this station. On 1 July 1937, the station was renamed Zama-Yuen Station (座間遊園駅). On 15 October 1941, it was renamed Zama Station (座間駅). In June 1945, all local trains began to run the full line, and the station became a stop for them. The through service ended then. On 1 October 1946, a semi-express service was added, and it stopped here. On 25 March 1960, a commuter semi-express service was added and stopped here.
On 6 April 1978, the elevated station building and the east-west free passage were completed and opened. On 22 March 2003, an elevator was installed, the free passage was widened, and the station building improvement work was completed. On 11 December 2004, a section semi-express was set up and stopped here. On 18 April 2008, new-format station name signs were introduced. On 20 February 2009, the toilet on the down platform moved to the elevated area inside the ticket gate. On 7 November 2011, an automated external defibrillator (AED) was installed and came into use outside the gates.
In January 2014, station numbering was introduced. On 17 March 2018, a commuter semi-express service was added and stopped here. On 12 February 2019, the address format was changed in part of the Iriya area, on the east side of the Odawara Line.
