Chiba is a major railway station in Tokyo.

Chiba Station (千葉駅) is a station in Chūō-ku, Chiba. JR East runs it on the Sotobō, Uchibō, Chūō–Sōbu Line (Local), Sōbu Line (Rapid) and Narita Express lines. It opened on 20 July 1894.

History

The Sobu Railway opened the station on 20 July 1894 as a general station. The Boso Railway began running trains into it on 25 February 1896. Both lines were nationalised on 1 September 1907. The Great Kanto earthquake destroyed the station on 1 September 1923. Air raids damaged it on 10 June 1945.

The station moved to an elevated site on its present location on 28 April 1963, which removed the switchbacks on the Sobu and Sotobo lines. The two platforms for the Narita Line were added on 1 February 1984. A travel centre opened on 1 April 1971, and freight handling ended on 10 May 1975. Track widening between Tsudanuma and Chiba was finished on 5 July 1981, and the grade crossing on the west side of Nishi-Chiba was separated on 20 December 1981. Japanese National Railways was split up on 1 April 1987, and JR East took over.

The Chiba Urban Monorail Line 2 opened on 12 June 1991, initially with a temporary station near Chiba-koen. Automatic ticket gates were installed on the east side on 11 September 1993. Monorail Line 1 opened on 1 August 1995, with this station as a stop. Wheelchair escalators were added to each platform between February and September 1997, so that every platform had one by 29 September 1997.

Suica could be used from 18 November 2001, and PASMO on the monorail from 14 March 2009. The station building with a three-storey retail area, Perie Chiba Ekinaka, opened on 20 November 2016. The fourth floor opened on 27 April 2017, and the whole building on 28 June 2018.

ATOS, the Tokyo area transport management system, was introduced on 16 February 2020. A booth-type shared office opened on 27 November 2020. Smart platform doors came into use on Platform 1 on 28 March 2024 and on Platform 2 on 13 March 2025.
