Funabashi is a major railway station in Tokyo.

Funabashi Station (船橋駅) is in Funabashi, Chiba. JR East runs the Chūō–Sōbu Line (Local) and Sōbu Line (Rapid) here, and Tobu Railway runs the Tobu Urban Park Line. The station opened on 20 July 1894 as a Sobu Railway station.

History

The Sobu Railway opened the station on 20 July 1894 for passengers and freight. The national railway bought the line on 1 September 1907. The Hokuso Railway opened its Funabashi to Kashiwa line on 27 December 1923. The Hokuso Railway was renamed Sobu Railway on 25 November 1929. A Kaijin branch from Funabashi opened on 25 December 1929 and closed on 3 April 1934. Tobu Railway absorbed the Sobu Railway on 1 March 1944, and merged its Funabashi line into the Noda Line on 16 April 1948.

On 28 March 1950 a following train crashed into a stopped Sobu local train at the station, because of a signal fault, and many passengers were injured. A travel centre opened on 21 November 1950. The national railway station was rebuilt on 8 April 1952. A south square was completed on 22 September 1967, and the Seibu department store opened the next day. The station became elevated on 27 September 1970. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1974. The north square opened on 7 October 1977, with the Tobu department store.

The Tobu station became elevated on 17 December 1980. Automatic ticket gates were installed on the JR side on 19 December 1992. A braille bell was added on 20 July 1996. JR East introduced Suica on 18 November 2001. The Face building on the south side opened on 17 April 2003.

Tobu introduced departure melodies on 10 March 2007, and PASMO on 18 March 2007. Tokkyu Shiosai limited express trains began stopping on Saturdays and holidays on 13 March 2010. Tobu platform doors came into use on 22 March 2014. The Home Liner Chiba began stopping on 26 March 2016. The Shapo Funabashi shopping complex opened on 9 February 2018, and the Seibu department store closed on 28 February 2018.

Tobu's express services between Omiya and Funabashi began stopping here on 14 March 2020. A station booth shared office opened on 27 November 2020. Tobu's commuter pass office closed on 9 April 2021, and the Bu View Plaza travel centre closed on 31 January 2022. A station travel concierge opened on 1 April 2022. Slit-frame platform doors for the JR local platforms are planned for within the fiscal year 2026.
