History
Ginza Station (銀座駅) opened on 3 March 1934 as a station of the Tokyo Underground Railway. Matsuya and Mitsukoshi provided funds, and the station was in Ginza, in Kyobashi Ward of Tokyo City. On 1 September 1941, under the transport coordination law, the Tokyo Underground Railway was merged into the Teito Rapid Transit Authority. On 21 May 1956 automatic ticket machines were installed. On 15 December 1957 the Marunouchi Line Nishi-Ginza station opened, with transfers to the Ginza Line. At first it was a separate station, not connected to the Ginza Line inside the ticket gates. When the Hibiya Line's Ginza station opened, the Marunouchi station was renamed Ginza and treated as the same station. On 29 August 1964 the Hibiya Line station opened, and the Marunouchi Nishi-Ginza station was merged into Ginza.
On 1 July 1971 the Teito Rapid Transit Authority air-conditioned a station for the first time, at Ginza and Nihombashi together. On 1 April 1983 an information office opened, again at Ginza and Nihombashi together. On 4 November 1993 a commuter-pass renewal machine was introduced. On 13 October 1994 a stained-glass artwork called Rakuen (Paradise) was installed in the concourse, as part of an art space named Ginza no Oasis. On 8 June 2000 the station was chosen for the Kanto region's list of selected stations. The reason given was an artistic station space in central Tokyo, with a bronze statue of the subway company's founder, President Hayakawa, and the stained glass Rakuen, staged with sound and lighting.
On 1 April 2004 the Teito Rapid Transit Authority was privatised, and the station passed to Tokyo Metro. A new signage system was introduced at the same time. PASMO could be used from 18 March 2007. On 23 March 2008 movable platform doors came into use on the Marunouchi Line platforms. On 29 June 2012 the station shopping complex Echika fit Ginza opened. On 31 October 2012 departure melodies were introduced on the Ginza Line platforms. On 26 January 2016 smoke filled the station after dust burned inside a ventilation shaft near the C2 exit. The Hibiya Line was suspended on all of its route for a time. Many passengers were affected.
On 8 April 2016 departure melodies were introduced on the Hibiya Line platforms, and a new version was used from 7 February 2020. On 6 June 2020 transfers began to the Yurakucho Line's Ginza-Itchome Station. On 16 October 2020 the renewal of the station was completed, and the facilities were shown to the press. On 20 October 2021 the Ginza station renewal received the Good Design Award for 2021.
