Shimbashi Station (新橋駅) in Minato, Tokyo, serves the Ginza Line, Tōkaidō Line, Yamanote Line, Yokosuka Line, Keihin–Tōhoku Line and Asakusa Line. It opened on 16 December 1909 as Karasumori Station (烏森駅).
History
The station opened on 16 December 1909 as Karasumori Station (烏森駅), a passenger-only station in a temporary building. Paid public toilets were installed on 1 March 1910. The brick main building was completed on 30 March 1914. On 20 December 1914, when Tokyo Station opened, the station was renamed Shimbashi, and the old Shimbashi station was renamed Shiodome (汐留駅). The main building was partly rebuilt in 1925.
The Japanese National Railways was formed on 1 June 1949. An automatic ticket punch was tested in February 1963. On 8 February 1963 the Shiodome signal box opened when Line 1 (1号線, now the Ginza Line) opened between Ningyōchō and Higashi-Ginza. On 12 December 1963 the line was extended to Higashi-Ginza, and the signal box closed. On 12 December 1964 Line 1 was extended to Daimon, and Shimbashi became a stop along the way.
On 25 September 1968 the station building moved under the Tokaido Shinkansen viaduct. Luggage handling ended on 1 October 1968. On 1 October 1976 an underground platform was built for the Yokosuka Line, which had shared the Tokaido Line platforms. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. On 13 March 1988 Keihin–Tōhoku Line rapid services began, so during the day those trains pass through. Automatic ticket gates were installed on the Karasumori side on 17 November 1990, on the Hibiya and Ginza side on 24 November 1990, and at the Shiodome underground exit on 1 December 1990.
The Suica card became usable on 18 November 2001. On 21 April 2013 the Tokaido Line platform was widened. On 14 March 2015 the Ueno-Tokyo Line opened, and Utsunomiya, Takasaki and Joban line trains began to run through here.
Platform doors were introduced on 5 October 2019. The commuter pass sales office closed on 20 October 2019. The station shopping centre Ecute Edition Shimbashi (エキュートエディション新橋) opened on 28 March 2022. Eki-Net Q Ticket (えきねっとQチケ) service began on 1 October 2025.
