History
Ichigaya Station (市ケ谷駅) opened on 6 March 1895 as a station of the Kobu Railway (甲武鉄道). At first it was for passengers only. On 1 October 1906, the Kobu Railway was nationalised, and the station became a government railway station. On 12 October 1909, track naming put the station on the Chuo East Line, later renamed the Chuo Main Line. On 1 April 1942, luggage handling began. On 1 June 1949, the Japanese National Railways was established. On 1 May 1960, luggage handling ended.
On 30 October 1974, a Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan) Yurakucho Line station opened here. From the start, magnetic tickets were sold at the automatic ticket machines, because both end stations, Ikebukuro and Ginza-Itchome, had automatic gates. On 13 January 1979, part of the rebuilt national railway station opened, on the ground floor. On 17 July 1979, the whole rebuilt station opened as a two-storey steel building called Epo Ichigaya, and a Midori no Madoguchi opened with it. On 16 March 1980, the Toei Shinjuku Line station opened. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and the station became a JR East station. On 22 December 1990, automatic ticket gates were installed at JR East. On 26 March 1994, automatic ticket gates were installed at the connection gates between JR East and Eidan. On 25 June 1995, automatic ticket gates were installed at the connection gates between JR East and Toei. On 26 March 1996, the Eidan Namboku Line station opened.
On 18 November 2001, JR East began accepting Suica. On 1 April 2004, the Yurakucho and Namboku Line stations came under Tokyo Metro after the Eidan was privatised. On 18 March 2007, PASMO became usable at Tokyo Metro and Toei stations. On 15 October 2011, platform doors came into use on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. On 16 March 2013, Tokyo Metro and Toei started a ticket-gate pass service. On 10 March 2015, the departure melody on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line platform was changed. On 1 April 2015, the Toei Ichigaya station office closed and merged into the Tocho-mae station office.
On 6 March 2021, JR East began using smart platform doors. On 31 May 2021, the Toei commuter pass counter closed. On 28 February 2022, the Midori no Madoguchi closed. On 21 August 2024, a sudden heavy rain flooded the station from a Tokyo Metro exit, and the area around the ticket gates was flooded. On 1 October 2025, JR East started the eki-net Q Ticket (えきねっとQチケ) service.
