History
In June 1919, a transport research body set up by the Home Ministry announced a plan for a Kudanzaka station on the Ikebukuro to Sunosaki line. On 19 October 1962, the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan) began building the Tozai Line section here. On 10 November 1964, construction of the Tozai Line section here was completed. On 23 December 1964, the station opened as the end of the Tozai Line when it was extended from Takadanobaba. On 16 March 1966, the Tozai Line was extended to Takebashi, and the station became a midway station.
On 1 May 1975, construction began here on the Toei subway line that is now the Shinjuku Line, and on the Eidan line that is now the Hanzomon Line. Those sections were completed on 29 February 1980. On 16 March 1980, the Toei Shinjuku Line opened between Shinjuku and Iwamotocho, and the station became an interchange between the Tozai and Shinjuku lines. On 26 January 1989, the Eidan Hanzomon Line opened between Hanzomon and Mitsukoshimae, and the station took its present form. On 4 April 2000, a train bound for Oshiage left platform four with an unattended baby stroller caught in its door. On 1 April 2004, the Tozai and Hanzomon Line stations came under Tokyo Metro after the Eidan was privatised. On 18 March 2007, PASMO became usable.
On 16 March 2013, the wall between platforms four and five was removed, and the concourses of the Hanzomon Line and Toei Shinjuku Line were connected. On 21 May 2015, a departure melody was introduced on the Tozai Line platform. On 6 March 2016, a trial of wide-opening platform doors began on platform two, and it ran for a limited period. On 13 September 2018, a departure melody was introduced on the Hanzomon Line platform. On 14 March 2020, a shared ticket gate for three lines opened.
