Kinshicho Station (錦糸町駅) is an elevated station in Sumida, Tokyo. East Japan Railway Company and Tokyo Metro run it. It serves the Hanzōmon Line, the Chūō–Sōbu Line (Local) and the Sōbu Line (Rapid). It opened on 9 December 1894 as Honjo Station (本所駅).
History
Kinshicho Station opened on 9 December 1894 as Honjo Station (本所駅) on the Sōbu Railway (総武鉄道). In 1895, the Sōbu Railway's Honjo factory and locomotive shed opened inside the station grounds. On 1 September 1907, the Sōbu Railway was bought under the Railway Nationalisation Act and became state property. On 1 May 1915, the station was renamed Kinshicho Station, and on 11 May 1915, the factory and shed were renamed too. On 1 September 1923, the Great Kantō Earthquake destroyed the station area. The factory and shed then moved to the Shin-Koiwa marshalling yard.
On 10 March 1945, Tokyo air raids burned the station completely. On 25 November 1961, the station office part of the south exit building began use. On 28 November 1961, a station building called Ekibiru Kinshi-machi opened at the south exit. It is now called Telmina. On 1 October 1967, two private rail sidings were abolished. On 15 July 1972, the Sōbu Rapid line between Tokyo and Kinshicho opened, and the station became a transfer point between the Sōbu Local and Sōbu Rapid lines. On 30 May 1980, a building called Ragirl opened at the north exit. It is now called Telmina 2.
On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up and privatised, and the station became a station of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). On 13 March 1993, automatic ticket gates were installed at the north exit. On 18 November 2001, Suica became usable. On 19 March 2003, the Hanzōmon Line station opened under the Teito Rapid Transit Authority, and transfers between the Teito Rapid Transit Authority and JR began. On 23 July 2003, Telmina West Wing opened. On 1 April 2004, the Teito Rapid Transit Authority was privatised, and the Hanzōmon Line station passed to Tokyo Metro. On 18 March 2007, PASMO became usable on Tokyo Metro.
On 2 February 2016, the Midori no Madoguchi ticket window at the JR north exit closed. On 27 April 2017, the first floor of Telmina at the JR south exit was renovated, and the outside of the station building was renovated too. On 13 September 2018, the Hanzōmon Line introduced a departure melody. On 30 September 2020, the View Plaza closed. On 3 April 2021, platform doors started on the Sōbu Local platforms. On 1 October 2025, Eki-net Q Ticket service started on JR East.
