History

Kurihashi Station (栗橋駅) opened on 16 July 1885 with the Nippon Railway line from Ōmiya to Utsunomiya. The Tone River bridge to the next station, Koga, was not yet finished. A temporary station, Nakada, was set up on the far bank, and a ferry ran between them. On 17 June 1886 the first railway bridge over the Tone River, between here and Nakada, opened, and Nakada became a signal station. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised. On 10 November 1908 the double track between Kuki and here was completed. On 12 October 1909 the line was named the Tōhoku Main Line. On 1 April 1929 the Tobu Nikkō Line station opened, with the Sugito to Shin-Kanuma section.

On 16 September 1947 Typhoon Kasurin (カスリーン台風) broke the Tone River bank at Higashi-mura. The flood reached Kurihashi-machi and damaged the station. On 1 January 1950 the Tone River bridge was raised and repaired, and the Tōhoku Line station was moved a short distance toward Tokyo. On 14 April 1958 the Ōmiya to Utsunomiya section was electrified.

On 1 February 1984 parcel handling ended. On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up, and the station became part of JR East. On 10 December 2000 the station building was raised, a west exit opened, and JR and Tobu were given separate station buildings. It was the first Japanese railway station to have an accessible toilet with an ostomate facility. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable on JR. On 16 March 2013 the Tobu rapid service zone was extended, and this station became a pass-through station. On 18 March 2006 a connecting track between JR East and Tobu opened, and Spacia Nikkō and Kinugawa express trains began running. On 29 November 2009 the Fairway rapid service was suspended.

On 14 January 2022 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. On 1 February 2022 JR East's station began operating under an outsourced contract. On 19 March 2022 the Tobu station's address changed after a land readjustment project.
